Government defends luxury coaches pricing, says it's value for money

By |

Transport PS says the government is considering a pricing model of Sh12,000 for a one-way ticket and Sh20,000 for a return journey.

The government has defended the pricing of tickets for the newly introduced luxury coaches on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), asserting that the Sh12,000 one-way fare offers value for money through an enhanced travel experience featuring entertainment and fine dining services.

Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar recently inspected the four new luxury coaches that are set to be introduced to the Madaraka Express passenger service.

He disclosed that the government is considering a pricing model of Sh12,000 for a one-way ticket and Sh20,000 for a return journey. The announcement has sparked a mixed reaction among Kenyans, with many questioning the value proposition of such a high fare in a country where affordability remains a key concern for most travellers.

The introduction of these premium coaches is part of the government's broader strategy to cater to a growing segment of high-end travellers and tourists who seek luxury and exclusivity.

However, the high cost has raised concerns, especially regarding the accessibility and inclusivity of the service. Some members of the public have questioned whether the pricing is justified, particularly in the context of safety and emergency preparedness on board.

Despite these concerns, the government maintains that the premium service will not only provide comfort but also position Kenya as a luxury travel destination.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei, speaking during a recent event at the SGR Nairobi Terminus, highlighted the strategic importance of the premium coaches.

He explained that the luxury services are intended to attract high-profile dignitaries and tourists, which in turn would boost the country’s foreign exchange earnings. “The services here outmatch what they experience in developed countries. This will, in return, boost foreign exchange,” Sing’oei noted.

"Unique services"

According to Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Maingi, the fare reflects the unique services that will be provided to passengers. "It is costly, yes, but look at the services provided. The entertainment, spacious adjustable seats, and fine dining services are top-notch, there's value for money. There has also been a demand for VIP First Class coaches. Last year, we registered a staggering 2.5 million passengers,” Maingi stated during a test ride of one of the new luxury coaches.

The luxury coaches were put to the test during a recent trial run, where a delegation of African ambassadors became the first passengers to experience the Premium Class Coach on a journey from Nairobi to Mombasa.

The 5-hour journey, which provided a glimpse into the service offerings, was met with positive feedback. Botswana Ambassador to Kenya, Sabdiyo Dido Bashuna, praised the experience, stating, “This is an experience only likened to what we go through in developed countries. Well done, Kenya, the ride was so smooth, and we were comfortable.”

Each of the four luxury coaches, which have a capacity of 28 passengers, is equipped with luxurious adjustable seats, individual entertainment systems, and fine dining options. During the trial run, passengers were treated to gourmet meals served at intervals, enhancing the overall travel experience.

The commercial launch of these premium coaches is scheduled for September, with an official inauguration by President William Ruto set to take place.

The government hopes that the introduction of these high-end services will not only improve the SGR's appeal but also contribute to the country’s tourism and hospitality sectors.
