The Tourism and Wildlife Ministry, led by Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and governors from the Coast region, recently convened a meeting to revolutionise the country's tourism sector.

They focused on devising innovative strategies to overcome recent setbacks and pave the way for unprecedented success in the travel and leisure industry.

During the meeting, a raft of initiatives were deliberated upon, encompassing a wide array of plans to rejuvenate tourism.

Discussions centred on key proposals, including the implementation of an open skies policy, streamlining visa procedures, the establishment of a national aquarium, development of cruise docks, introduction of fresh tourism experiences and fortification of national parks' security.

Others include the promotion of halal tourism, advancement of ecotourism, emphasis on sports tourism, and infrastructural improvements such as street lighting and better access roads.

The agenda encompassed upgrading hotel facilities and extending support to beach operators' cooperatives.

The ministry pledged its commitment to collaboration and financial backing for these projects, aiming to deliver palpable benefits to local communities by the first quarter of 2024.

A crucial aspect highlighted in the meeting was the importance of assessing hotel ratings and setting up a fund to aid in refurbishments that align with global standards, ensuring a competitive edge in the international tourism market.
