Japanese atomic bomb survivors group Nihon Hidankyo wins 2024 Nobel Peace Prize

Nihon Hidankyo is a grassroots movement made up of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, known as Hibakusha.
The Japanese organisation, Nihon Hidankyo, has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize.
In a statement on the X platform, the Nobel Peace Center announced that the organisation was recognised for its tireless efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons.

The Nobel Peace Centre praised the organisation for its advocacy and powerful witness testimonies, which highlight the devastating consequences of nuclear warfare.
"This grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, also known as Hibakusha, is receiving the Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again," the committee stated.
Founded in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo has consistently advocated for the abolition of nuclear arms, using the personal experiences of survivors who experienced the atomic bombings during World War II.
Their testimonies serve as a haunting reminder of the human cost of nuclear conflict and have helped amplify global calls for disarmament.
The award is viewed as a recognition of the decades-long perseverance of the Hibakusha, whose stories of suffering have played a significant role in shaping the global peace movement.
