Speaker Wetang’ula gazettes MPs approval of Kindiki as DP

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has officially gazetted the approval of Kithure Kindiki’s nomination as the country’s next Deputy President.

This comes after the National Assembly on Friday voted in favour of Kindiki’s nomination during a session held on October 18, 2024, at the main Parliament Building.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kindiki, was nominated earlier in the day by President William Ruto to fill the vacancy left in the Office of the Deputy President following the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua by the Senate.

"The National Assembly has voted to approve the nomination of Prof. Kithure Kindiki to fill the vacant position of Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya. The vote, held on Friday, October 18, 2024, in the National Assembly Chamber at the Parliament Building, was conducted in accordance with Article 149 (1) and Article 122 of the Constitution of Kenya. Prof. Kindiki, EGH, has been selected to assume the role of Deputy President," the Gazette Notice read in part.

At the same time, the High Court has put a temporary halt on the appointment process.

Justice Chacha Mwita issued a conservatory order suspending the Senate’s resolution to impeach Gachagua.

This order blocks any appointments to the office of the Deputy President until October 24, pending further legal review.

The court’s ruling came in response to an urgent application filed by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, acting on behalf of Gachagua.

Justice Mwita highlighted that the file has been remitted to Chief Justice Martha Koome, who will now appoint a bench to deliberate on the constitutional issues raised by the case.

“In the meantime, a conservatory order is issued suspending the Senate’s resolution to uphold the impeachment charges against the Deputy President,” said Justice Mwita.
