Starehe United is a grassroots football team in Pangani, Nairobi, striving to make a name for itself despite financial challenges. With no official sponsorship or league participation, the team relies on self-motivation and passion to stay competitive. Led by captain Emmanuel Ochieng and assistant captain Stephen Musyoka, the club is determined to grow, playing friendlies and tournaments to sharpen their skills.
In Nairobi’s Pangani area, Starehe United is slowly making its mark in grassroots football despite facing financial hurdles. The club, now in its second year, is led by captain Emmanuel Ochieng and assistant captain Stephen Musyoka.
Like many grassroots teams, Starehe United struggles with sponsorship. Musyoka admits that players cover their own costs to keep the team running.
“We train at Grions Ground in Pangani every Sunday. That’s when we’re available unless we have away matches,” Musyoka said.
Founded in 2024, the team lacks a permanent training ground but continues to grow. Most of its players juggle work and football, making Sundays the only viable training day.
“The team is still young, but we are progressing despite not having a permanent pitch,” Musyoka added.
Without a formal management structure, Ochieng has taken on additional responsibilities beyond his captaincy. He believes the team’s greatest strength is self-motivation.
“We come from different parts of Nairobi, and every player funds themselves to attend games. It’s all driven by passion,” he said.
Currently, Starehe United is not in any league but plays friendly matches and tournaments to assess its growth. The team has been on an unbeaten run, though their recent goalless draw against Trade FC left them frustrated.
“As captain, I’m disappointed. We didn’t put in enough effort today. In our last friendly, we won 5-3 in Donholm, so this feels like a setback,” Ochieng remarked.
Despite the challenges, Ochieng remains optimistic. He believes the team provides a positive outlet for young players and urges more youths to join instead of engaging in unproductive activities.
“We all know some players make a living from football, so you never know when your chance might come. Play the game, bond with others, and enjoy the experience. Even if you don’t turn professional, football itself is rewarding,” he said.
With determination and passion, Starehe United continues to push forward, hoping for better opportunities in the future.
