Mashujaa Day: 142 to be feted as National Heroes Fund awaits activation

Plans are also in the works to publish books detailing their significant roles in the country's history.

Close to 142 heroes will be feted during Sunday’s Mashujaa Day celebrations from 14 categories including sports, philanthropy, statesmanship and indigenous cultures.

President William Ruto is set to unveil the names of these heroes, many of whom have risked their lives for the betterment of their communities, with some being recognised posthumously.

Culture and Heritage Principal Secretary Ummi Bashir on Friday announced that the selection of these honourees followed a rigorous vetting process.

"A member of the public, an organisation, a group of persons, or an institution can nominate suitable persons to be recommended for declaration as heroes," she said.

After receiving nominations, the council evaluates them according to criteria outlined in the Kenya Heroes Act, No. 5 of 2014. The proposed names are then published in at least two national newspapers to allow public representation.

This year's event not only aims to celebrate these individuals but also highlights plans to activate the National Heroes Fund, which was established in 2014 but has yet to be operationalised.

Once activated, the fund will provide financial assistance to heroes and their dependents.

"Apart from the normal certificates and recognition, we owe it to our heroes. We are looking at activating the National Heroes Fund which should be able to support them and their families," PS Ummi said.

In previous years, such as 2022, a total of 157 heroes were honoured.

PS Ummi stated that in addition to commendation certificates and medals, honoured heroes might have symbolic tombs, monuments, or statues erected in their honour.

Plans are also in the works to publish books detailing their significant roles in the country's history.

The government's commitment to supporting these individuals marks a new approach, as it plans to allocate resources to assist heroes in their day-to-day lives.

PS Ummi noted that this initiative reflects a recognition of the sacrifices made by these heroes for the betterment of society.
