National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula has called for urgent legislative reforms aimed at enhancing business competitiveness, fighting corruption, and attracting foreign investment to Kenya.
Speaking at a roundtable event with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) in Naivasha on Tuesday, October 29, Wetang'ula highlighted three crucial Bills currently under consideration: the Whistleblower Protection Bill, 2023; the Conflict of Interest Bill, 2024; and the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal (Amendment) Bill, 2024.

Wetang'ula said that these Bills are designed to increase transparency, improve procurement processes, and effectively manage conflicts of interest, all of which are vital for reinforcing ethical business practices in the country.
"This would significantly increase collaborative efforts to combat corruption, promoting more transparent, accountable, and ethical business practices," he said
The Speaker noted that these reforms, along with additional initiatives targeting key sectors such as agriculture, health, and ICT, will play a crucial role in driving job creation and fostering economic growth.
"We must leverage the role of the legislature to enhance Kenya's competitiveness for the creation of jobs, wealth, and inclusive prosperity," Wetang'ula asserted.
The Speaker further stressed the potential of strong legislative partnerships to transform Kenya into a regional economic hub by fostering transparency and creating a competitive environment.
Wetang'ula commended the private sector for its commitment to legislative initiatives that promote economic growth and encourage collaboration over legal disputes on contentious issues.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah, who also spoke at the forum, echoed Wetang'ula's sentiments regarding the importance of these legislative efforts in addressing youth unemployment and driving economic growth.
"Our joint efforts will yield actionable outcomes impacting all sectors, from large corporations to SMEs that sustain millions of livelihoods," Ichung'wah noted, acknowledging KEPSA's vital role in policy discussions that affect both small and large businesses.
Meanwhile, Minority Leader Junet Mohamed highlighted the challenges businesses face, such as high taxes, infrastructure deficits, and rising energy costs, and urged Parliament to prioritise stable fiscal policies that would encourage investment, underscoring the need for a supportive environment for business growth.
