Mudavadi urges caution on roads as over 4,000 killed in crashes since January

Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on Kenyans to enhance road safety as the country prepares for the festive season.
His appeal follows a tragic accident at Iguhu Bridge on the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, which claimed 13 lives and left several other people injured.

"I am saddened by the grisly accident and join in mourning with the families who have tragically lost their loved ones. May the Lord grant them comfort and strength," Mudavadi said on Friday.
Mudavadi further revealed alarming statistics showing a significant rise in road fatalities and injuries this year.
Between January and November, 4,047 lives have been lost on Kenyan roads, an increase from 3,726 during the same period last year.
The number of accidents has also risen, with 20,369 incidents reported compared to 19,262 in 2023. Serious injuries now stand at 10,124, up from 9,059 last year.
"These statistics are a stark reminder of the need for vigilance on our roads. Many of these accidents, especially among motorcyclists, pillion passengers, and pedestrians, were preventable," Mudavadi said.
The CS urged motorists, especially public service vehicle (PSV) operators, to prioritise safety.
"I would urge motorists to drive carefully and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. PSVs must adhere to road safety rules, and operators should ensure compliance with all regulations," he said.
Mudavadi directed traffic police officers to intensify road safety enforcement.
He instructed them to ensure all PSVs are roadworthy, display valid road service licenses, operate on licensed routes, and clearly show the name of their registered sacco or company.
"As Kenyans prepare for the festive season, let us prioritise safety on the roads to protect lives," Mudavadi said, reiterating his call for caution as students complete their KCSE exams and travel increases across the country.
