State urged to form special police unit to investigate rising femicide cases

Waiguru stressed that the proposed unit would play a crucial role in investigating and curbing the ongoing killings of women across the country.
The government has been urged to formulate a special police unit within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to address the rising cases of femicide in Kenya.
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru made the call during a thanksgiving service at St. Mary’s Ngariama Anglican Church in Gichugu Sub-County, where she highlighted the urgent need for targeted intervention to combat the increasing violence against women.

Waiguru stressed that the proposed unit would play a crucial role in investigating and curbing the ongoing killings of women across the country.
"Femicide is the most extreme form of violence against women, and the rising number of these cases points to a worsening national crisis," she said.
She added that a long-term solution to the killings of women and girls must be found to stop further escalation.
"The many reports of women being murdered across the country highlight a serious issue that needs immediate attention," she said.
The governor thanked President William Ruto for his efforts so far but urged a more comprehensive approach to tackle the problem.
"We thank the President for the actions taken, but we are calling for a long-term solution and a detailed assessment of what our society needs to address the causes of femicide and gender-based violence," she said.
As Kenya prepares to observe the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, Waiguru called for collective efforts to ensure that femicide and gender-based violence do not escalate.
"Gender-based violence has no place in our society, we are hoping during those 16 days of activism this coming week, we will have proposals and solutions that will give us a comprehensive plan that will provide us lasting solutions to the femicide and gender-based violence," she added.
The governor also urged other stakeholders in the justice sector to create similar units to ensure justice for the victims. She reiterated the need for police to act swiftly and bring perpetrators to justice.
Additionally, Waiguru urged local MCAs to avoid divisive politics and focus on fulfilling their promises to the electorate, warning that political divisions could hamper the delivery of services to the people.
