Ex-CS Amina Mohamed's home, mama Uhuru house demolished

Former CS Amina Mohamed's home at Milimani Estate in Kakamega was on Wednesday demolished.

Reports indicate that the home was demolished to pave the way for President William Ruto’s affordable housing project.

Residents could be seen scrambling for building materials after the demolition.

The house is registered under Lucas Nandih Shamallah but the locals say it belongs to the former CS.

This happened despite a court order barring its destruction.

The iconic Mama Uhuru house along Kangundo Road at the Kangundo Road market was also demolished on Wednesday at dawn.

The two-floor flat belonged to relatives of Kenya's freedom fighter Mwanaisha Bilali, who was also known as Mama Uhuru. She died on September 9, 2009.

The Nairobi County Government said the house and three other buildings were demolished after the expiry of notices issued two years ago.

Many Kenyans have been affected by the demolitions that are set to pave the way for the housing project in several counties.

President Ruto has been touting the Affordable Housing Programme, saying it is a path towards a better quality of life for Kenyans.

He says the programme will provide thousands of families with an opportunity to own a home and present numerous other Kenyans with economic access during construction.

“I laid the foundation stone for the construction of the 200-unit Nanyuki Affordable Housing Project that will generate more than 1,000 jobs,” he said on Wednesday in Laikipia East, Laikipia County.

On Tuesday, he commissioned the 1506-unit Pioneer Affordable Housing Project in Kapseret, saying that it will generate over 10,000 jobs.

“The 220-unit housing project will engage more than 500 youth directly in construction and create close to 3000 indirect jobs,” he said.

The programme, according to Ruto, will give ordinary citizens the opportunity to become homeowners.
