Kenyans have been invited to attend open days to inspect 4,888 housing units completed under the government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
The initiative, spearheaded by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, aims to address the country’s housing deficit by providing accessible homeownership options.

In a statement, Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga urged potential homeowners to take advantage of the holiday season to visit the 24 project sites across the country and explore the available housing options.
He emphasised that the open days would provide a chance for Kenyans to engage directly with the programme and begin their journey to owning a home.
“We would like to invite you all to attend the open days scheduled to take place in Machakos and across our 23 other projects countrywide to view the showhouses on site and the various housing units near completion,” he said.
In Machakos, the project includes 40 one-bedroom units, 60 two-bedroom units, and 60 three-bedroom units.
According to Hinga, the development features generous green spaces, sufficient parking for all homeowners, and designs aimed at fostering community living.
He noted that the government has made 4,888 housing units available for sale in various regions, offering different typologies to suit diverse needs.
“Plans are underway to expand the programme, with more projects in advanced stages of development,” he said.
The open days provide a platform for Kenyans to make inquiries about the programme, seek assistance with registration on the Boma Yangu portal, and learn about flexible payment options.
Hinga said the units can be purchased through instalments, a rent-to-own scheme extending up to 25 years, or a lump-sum payment.
He reiterated that the initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure affordable housing becomes a reality for more citizens countrywide.
In an advertisement published on December 3, 2024, the Ministry outlined the range of housing options available under the government’s projects, which include studio apartments and one-bedroom to three-bedroom units.
The projects are designed to cater to Kenyans across all income groups. Social Housing is aimed at individuals earning below Sh20,000, while Affordable Housing targets those with monthly earnings between Sh20,000 and Sh149,000.
For higher earners, Affordable Middle-Class Housing is available for those earning above Sh149,000.
To purchase a unit, prospective buyers are advised to visit the eCitizen portal at www.ecitizen.go.ke and navigate to the Boma Yangu tab. Once there, users can register and create a Boma Yangu account, and begin saving for their home deposit by making regular contributions to their Boma Yangu savings wallet.
