Humorous 'Misheveve chief’ Protus Wechuli retires from public service

Wechuli, who served as the chief of Saboti Location for nearly two decades, became a viral sensation due to his humorous and warm approach to his duties.
Chief Protus Wechuli, popularly known as the 'Misheveve Chief', has officially retired from his distinguished public service career.
A ceremony for his retirement was held on April 5, 2025 in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County.
The event was attended by many residents who celebrated the charismatic chief’s unique blend of community leadership and humour.
Wechuli, who served as the chief of Saboti Location for nearly two decades, became a viral sensation due to his humorous and warm approach to his duties.
He won the hearts of many Kenyans after a viral video in which he humorously recounted a domestic dispute involving a man who was furious after being served pumpkin leaves (misheveve) instead of his preferred African kales (sarat).
During the retirement ceremony, Wechuli entertained guests with his signature humour, as he formally handed over his official duties.
With a playful tone, he joked, “Nilirudisha stapler, uniform, fimbo ya serikali, ikanibakishia suruali peke yake ndiyo hii.” (I returned the stapler, uniform, and government staff, but the only thing left is my trousers).
He kept up his comedic tone, jokingly describing "misheveve" as a fast-growing, cost-effective vegetable. He then playfully asked, "Can you really use misheveve for anything inappropriate?"
"Misheveve ni very economical, inaiva haraka kuliko sarat. Na misheveve inatembelea chini. Unaweza kufanyia usherati kwa misheveve kweli?"
Wechuli’s remarks had the crowd in stitches.
His combination of light-hearted humor and genuine affection for his community made him a beloved figure.
During his speech, he recalled his long journey to becoming a chief, describing how he tried for years before finally securing the position. He expressed his love for the job, having served for 18 years.
Among the dignitaries in attendance was DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who took to social media to pay tribute to Wechuli.
“One of the most popular chiefs in Kenya, Mr Wechuli, aka ‘Misheveve,’ retired today and was celebrated by Kenyans from all walks of life for his distinguished service. What a joyous day in Saboti, Trans Nzoia County! Hongera, my friend!” Wamalwa wrote on X.
