Police arrest four, seize cocaine worth Sh2.8 million

Officers also seized 500 kilograms of marijuana in a lorry in Nguni on the Mwingi-Garissa highway.

Police have arrested four people on allegations of trafficking cocaine and marijuana.

Two people were apprehended in Fedha estate, Nairobi, in the wee hours of Thursday after detectives working on a tipoff found them with 700 grams of cocaine.

Sources close to the investigation said one had travelled to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and procured cocaine with a street value of Sh2.8 million on behalf of the other, his boss.

Police are investigating claims that they cover a network that includes Kenyan distributors and Nigerian suppliers operating from an Airbnb in Addis Ababa.

In another incident, a separate team of officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intercepted a lorry in the Nguni area on the Mwingi-Garissa highway, on suspicion of illegal activity.

A search found about 500 kilograms of marijuana, leading to the arrest of the driver and the conductor.

The marijuana was found hidden in a false compartment in the cargo section of the vehicle that was on a routine delivery to Nairobi's Kiamaiko area.

A police report says cocaine is popular with Nairobi’s upmarket nightlife and that the city is a hub for storing and packing marijuana.

Where the Huruma neighbourhood is concerned, detectives have linked the surge in real estate construction there to the proceeds of drug trafficking.

The four were taken to Muthaiga Police Station ahead of arraignment at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Law Courts on Monday.
