Jubilee opts out of Kariobangi North by-election, backs Wiper candidate

Jubilee’s decision is being viewed as part of broader efforts by opposition parties to strengthen their electoral strategy by avoiding internal competition in key areas, particularly in Nairobi.
The Jubilee Party has opted out of the Kariobangi North Ward by-election and is instead backing a Wiper Party candidate, describing the move as an effort to strengthen opposition unity.
The announcement was made by Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni on Friday, who explained that the party’s decision was aimed at building a united front among opposition outfits.

Kioni pointed out that the ward had previously been represented by Joel Munuve, who worked closely with Wiper before his death.
“In the spirit of opposition solidarity, and cognizant of the fact that this seat was previously under a leader working with Wiper, Jubilee has resolved not to present a candidate. We will rally our full support behind Wiper’s candidate to ensure that the people of Kariobangi North continue to enjoy effective representation,” Kioni said on Friday.
The by-election will be conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following the vacancy created by Munuve’s passing. The poll is scheduled for 27 November 2025.
Jubilee’s decision is being viewed as part of broader efforts by opposition parties to strengthen their electoral strategy by avoiding internal competition in key areas, particularly in Nairobi.
Kioni added that the party’s priority goes beyond electoral wins, focusing on safeguarding democratic achievements.
“Our unity is our strength. This move reaffirms our commitment to strengthening the opposition’s voice and ensuring that Kenyans are adequately represented in all spheres of governance,” he stated.
Meanwhile, IEBC has assured the public that all arrangements for the by-election have been finalised. The commission recently received the necessary budgetary support from the National Treasury, clearing earlier financial concerns.
IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon confirmed that the funding issue had been addressed and the commission was fully prepared for the polls.
“We would like to assure the country and citizens that all preparations are in top gear, and the resources we needed to conduct successful by-elections are now available to us,” Ethekon stated.
This assurance followed weeks of concern over possible delays due to funding shortfalls. According to Ethekon, those challenges were resolved after talks with Treasury officials.
“Where there were shortages, we have had candid and fruitful discussions with our national treasury, who have since then unlocked that, and therefore there is no reason whatsoever why we should not have by-elections as planned,” he affirmed.
Ethekon also said the commission has been holding regular consultations with political parties and other electoral stakeholders to promote openness and preparedness ahead of the vote.
He highlighted engagements through the Political Parties Liaison Committee and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties as part of these efforts.
