Somalia Deputy PM Salah sounds alarm over flooding, says over 12 lives lost

Deputy Prime Minister of the Federal Government of Somalia, Salah Ahmed Jama, has issued a grave warning about the widespread flooding wreaking havoc in various regions of Somalia. He underscored the dire consequences of this natural disaster, particularly in Jubaland, with areas such as Doolow, Bardhere, Garbahaarey, Luuq, Buurdhuubo, and Jamaame significantly affected.

The deputy Prime Minister sadly confirmed that the flooding has tragically resulted in the loss of up to 12 lives in these regions. The surge in water levels, primarily attributed to the swelling of the Juba River, one of Somalia's largest rivers, has led to widespread destruction and displacement in the affected areas.

Expressing deep concern for the affected families and communities, Deputy Prime Minister Salah specifically highlighted the critical situation in Luuq. "The hardships faced by many families and communities, particularly in Luuq, are distressing. We are implementing various relief efforts to aid them," he stated.

In light of the ongoing crisis, he appealed to the Somali people to come together and extend support to those affected by the devastating floods. Jama emphasised the crucial role of collective efforts and solidarity in providing necessary assistance to individuals and communities enduring the challenges brought about by this calamity. Additionally, it is expected that the El Niño rains will persist, posing further threats to various parts of Southern Somalia.
