KFS refutes land grabbing claims at Menengai Crater, says boundary gazetted

The Service emphasised that the areas referenced in the viral posts lie outside the gazetted forest boundary, and that the forest itself remains fully protected.

The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has refuted social media reports alleging land grabbing within the Menengai Crater area, part of the Menengai Forest Station in Nakuru County.

In a statement released on Thursday, KFS clarified that the forest boundaries remain intact and no part of the gazetted Menengai Forest has been illegally occupied.

The Service emphasised that the areas referenced in the viral posts lie outside the gazetted forest boundary, and that the forest itself remains fully protected.

"KFS affirms that no part of the gazetted Menengai Forest has been grabbed. The forest boundaries are well demarcated and remain intact, as verified by KFS surveyors. The area being referenced in the reports lies outside the gazetted forest boundary," the service stated.

KFS highlighted that the ongoing Menengai Forest Fencing Project is a legitimate conservation initiative, funded by the African Development Bank through the GreenZones Development Support Project Phase II.

The project involves fencing approximately 55 kilometres around 6,014 hectares of forest to strengthen protection against encroachment, enhance visitor safety, and safeguard the ecosystem.

"All requisite procedures, including public participation and stakeholder consultations, were duly conducted prior to commencement to ensure transparency and inclusivity," KFS noted.

The Menengai Forest, renowned for its unique biodiversity, scenic crater landscapes, and critical water catchment functions, plays a vital role in supporting local livelihoods and promoting eco-tourism.

KFS reiterated that the fencing will not only deter encroachment but also enhance the sustainable management of the forest for future generations.

The Service urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities near forest areas to the nearest KFS office.

"The fencing initiative strengthens forest protection, deters encroachment, and enhances safety for visitors and surrounding communities.KFS categorically refutes all allegations of land grabbing and reiterates its unwavering commitment to conserving and protecting Kenya’s public forests in line with the Forest Conservation and Management Act, 2016," the organisation said.
