Residents in the counties mentioned have been advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods, and reduced visibility.

Kenya's Meteorological Department has issued a warning of expected heavy rains in several parts of the country.

In an advisory statement signed by Dr David Gikungu, director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rain being experienced over several parts of the Lake Victoria basin, Rift Valley region, and Nairobi is expected to continue for five days.

"It's likely to intensify from April 15 to April 18, 2024, to more than 50mm in 24 hours. Along the coast, the heavy rain is likely to be accompanied by gusty winds, large ocean waves, and strong southerly winds," read the statement.

43 counties are expected to be affected by the heavy rains. These include Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Busia, Nyamira, Kisii, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma.

Other counties include Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Machakos, Nairobi, Garissa, Isiolo, Kwale, Lamu, and others.

Residents in the counties mentioned have been advised to be on the lookout for potential flash floods and reduced visibility.

The Meteorological Department said flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily, especially downstream.

"Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or an open field and not shelter under trees to avoid being struck with lightning," said the statement.

The Met Department further warned that strong winds may uproot trees, and cause structural damage.

Met also noted that large waves may also affect Marine activities, adding that updates will be made promptly in case of any changes.
