In a tragic incident today, a prominent Pakistani religious leader, Mohamed Asgar, was killed, and another clergy member sustained serious injuries in a bandit attack along the Marsabit-Isiolo road. The injured individual was promptly rushed to Garbatulla Sub County Hospital for medical attention.
Sheikh Hassan Aden, a religious leader in Isiolo, revealed that the victims, both members of the Tablighi Jama’at, were en route to a three-day annual Muslim gathering known as Istimaa, scheduled to take place this week in Garbatulla, Isiolo County. Mohamed Asgar tragically lost his life on the spot.
Sheikh Hassan Aden further stated that the police had already informed the Pakistani embassy about the unfortunate incident, and efforts were underway to notify the deceased's relatives. Considering the religious beliefs of the Tablighi sect, there is a possibility that Mohamed Asgar may be buried in Isiolo, as followers prefer to be laid to rest where they meet their demise.
"He is a martyr who died while on a religious mission, and those responsible for his death will be held accountable before the Creator," asserted Sheikh Hassan.
The Tablighi Jama’at is a transnational Islamist movement founded in India in 1926, dedicated to renewing the faith of Muslims. Annually, hundreds of its members travel from India and Pakistan to Kenya and various other countries to propagate Islam.
This incident not only marks a tragic loss for the Tablighi community but also raises concerns about the safety of religious leaders and the need for increased security measures along the Marsabit-Isiolo road.
