Multi-agency security operation recovers 100 stolen goats in Turkana

The goats which were stolen from Lochacha village last week by suspected bandits were later handed over to the rightful owners at a GSU camp in Kainuk.

A multi-agency security team in Loyapat of Turkana county conducting an operation at Namakat village within Katilu location recovered 100 goats, one AK-47 assault rifle, one magazine and 11 rounds of ammunition.

The National Police Service (NPS) on Wednesday stated that the goats which were stolen from Lochacha village last week by suspected bandits, were later handed over to the rightful owners at a GSU camp in Kainuk.

NPS revealed that since the inception of Operation Maliza Uhalifu operation in 2023, a multi-agency team of NPS and Kenya Defence Forces made significant progress to recover a total of 241 illegal firearms, 15,345 animals, and 272 persons arrested to restore normalcy in the North Rift regions declared by the Government as " dangerous and disturbed areas".

The affected areas include Baringo, Laikipia, Samburu, Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Meru and Isiolo counties.

NPS said learning activities are ongoing after disruption by the banditry activities.

In mid-December last year, the Ministry of Interior announced a 62 per cent reduction in cattle rustling in the troubled region.

"The operation resulted in a 62 per cent reduction in cattle rusting occurrence, dropping from 63,054 stolen livestock to 23,668 decline," said the ministry.

The interior ministry further announced the operation making gains for the smooth administration of the primary and secondary national examinations.
