Committee recommends airfare reduction in Mandera-Nairobi route following public outcry

An ad hoc committee formed to review the inflated air ticket prices by airline operators in Mandera presented their report to Governor Mohamed Khalif today. The committee, composed of representatives from the business community, security committee, and county officials, engaged various stakeholders in response to public outcry over increased airfare three weeks ago. The surge in air ticket prices followed the disruption of road infrastructure by the El Niño rains.

After thorough consultations, the committee reached a resolution to reduce one-way flight tickets for the Mandera-Nairobi route from Sh25,000 to Sh16,000. Governor Mohamed, upon receiving the report, engaged with airline operators alongside the ad hoc committee. He emphasized that the inflated prices were unusual and urged the operators to comply with the committee's resolutions.

The governor announced a two-day ultimatum for airline operators and their agents to comply with the new pricing. Notably, road transport from Nairobi to Mandera resumed last week after the Kenya National Highways Authority restored various sections of the road damaged by the El Niño floods.
