Tensions are high in the Eledemtu district of Marsabit County following an attack that left seven people dead on Monday night.
The victims were travelling in a lorry when they were ambushed by gunmen around 11 pm, leaving three others injured—one critically—while another passenger escaped unharmed.
The injured are currently receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
Deputy County Commissioner David Saruni indicated that preliminary investigations suggest the attackers were from a neighbouring country. They are said to have been dressed in military uniforms resembling those from the neighbouring country.
Saruni confirmed that six of the deceased have been identified, adding, "Investigations are underway to establish the motive of the attack."
He assured residents that the attack was not motivated by tribal tensions and urged them to stop spreading rumours.
"I appeal to the public to stop spreading false information that this incident was a tribal clash, as it is causing unnecessary tension," Saruni added.
He urged residents to provide any information that could assist in the ongoing investigation.
