Deputy Inspector General Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli and Director Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin on Monday conducted a security assessment in Wajir and Mandera counties hours after an officer was killed by suspected Al-Shabaab militia and a government vehicle stolen.

The officers inspected the scene where the attack happened in Lafey Sub-County in Mandera.

In the incident that happened on Monday morning, the detective who was driving the vehicle was waylaid by the militia and shot dead along the road before they took over the official police vehicle and kidnapped his passenger.

The two had dropped the body of a deceased man at a local morgue when the incident happened.

A manhunt for the militia later followed but did not recover the stolen vehicle.

The incident happened barely six months after a similar one occurred in August this year where a government driver was killed and the government vehicle he was driving stolen and driven off to Somalia by suspected militia.

Later on, a local was arrested in Somalia on suspicion of having teamed up with some militia to ambush, kill the government driver and hijack the government vehicle.

"Following the attack, security has been beefed up in the area with the deployment of additional reinforcement teams from the Formed Police Units to maintain safety and security, even as DCI commences investigations into the matter," NPS said in a statement on Monday evening.

DIG Masengeli was also accompanied by GSU Commandant Ransom Loolmodoni, DCI Director of Operations Richard Mwaura, the Commander Special Operations Group Emitundo Pharise and other security officers.
