SUPKEM calls for empowerment of Garissa farmers to combat poverty, promote peace

The SUPKEM Garissa branch officials highlighted the lack of farm inputs and minimal farmer's participation in budget making.
The Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) has called for the empowering of Garissa farmers as a solution to reduce poverty and promote peace.
The council engaged the Garissa County Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Pastoral Economy on Friday where they presented key findings from the farmers and stakeholders engagements highlighting gaps that need to be addressed.

The SUPKEM Garissa branch officials led by the CEO Aden Abdi Awl highlighted the lack of farm inputs, minimal farmer's participation in budget making, inadequate monitoring and evaluation in the execution of county programmes and non-responsive budget by the county government as challenges that the Garissa farmers were facing.
"Farmers need to be empowered in the wake of the challenges posed by climate change, the assembly must work towards empowering farmers leveraging agriculture as a solution for poverty and peace," said the SUPKEM CEO.
He urged the committee to remain committed to ensuring farmers were supported by the county government using their oversight role on budget allocation and implementation.
Active sector working groups
Aden called for the need to establish active sector working groups within the executive that will enhance monitoring of departmental work planned, through budget analysis and socially accountable budgets.
The County Assembly committee chair Abdi Muhidin Aden who is also Sangailu Ward MCA assured the SUPKEM officials of engaging the county executive on the need to address the concerns of the farmers and the stakeholders.
"We will not relent in our efforts to collaborate with you to ensure the farmers were supported to overcome the challenges they were facing in a bid to support sustainable agriculture," he assured.
The assembly committee vice chairman and Jarajara ward MCA, Hussein Aden Durow emphasised how the committee will prioritise the need for better planning and addressing misplaced priorities within the relevant department.
Fatuma Mohamed Shide a nominated MCA and committee member stressed the importance of involving farmers and stakeholders in planning and the budget-making process.
Other committee members who spoke reiterated the need to address the findings presented and the importance of collaboration and accountability to support the farmers.
