Dreams on Hold: Top KCPE Performer in Mandera risks missing dream school

Nurdin Abdullahi, the top student in his public primary school in Mandera, faces the heartbreaking possibility of his dream of becoming a neurosurgeon becoming a distant mirage. Despite securing an impressive 396 marks in his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams, financial obstacles threaten to keep him from attending his dream school.

With a calling letter from Kanga High School in Migori County, Nurdin's aspirations soar beyond the limitations of his local schools plagued by insecurity and teacher shortages. He poured his heart and soul into his studies, hoping to escape the harsh realities of his family's struggles and excel in a renowned institution.

But the joy of academic excellence is overshadowed by the weight of financial constraints. Nurdin's mother, Halima Abubakar, the sole breadwinner for her family of ten, relies on a donkey cart for income, a precarious livelihood often yielding meager results. Despite her valiant efforts, sending Nurdin to Kanga High School seems an insurmountable feat.

Equity Bank denied their plea for a scholarship, leaving the family in a desperate plea for support. Mama Halima's voice trembles with worry, fearing the consequences of a shattered dream for her son. "My biggest worry now is what will this boy do if he misses the school he had been called to," she laments.

Nurdin's story shines a spotlight on the stark realities faced by many talented students from underprivileged backgrounds.
