Government releases Sh3.52bn for Inua Jamii payout to 1.7 million vulnerable Kenyans

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, confirmed that a total of 1,760,510 beneficiaries will receive the funds.

Over 1.7 million vulnerable Kenyans, including orphans and those aged 70 and above, will benefit from Sh3.52 billion in government funding released under the Inua Jamii Cash Transfer Programme for April 2025.

The disbursement marks the second cycle since the programme transitioned fully to the e-Citizen M-Pesa platform earlier this year.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, through the State Department for Social Protection and Senior Citizen Affairs, confirmed that a total of 1,760,510 beneficiaries will receive the funds.

These include older persons aged 70 years and above, orphans and vulnerable children, and persons living with severe disabilities.

Each beneficiary will receive Sh2,000 for the April 2025 cycle, with payments accessible via mobile money services.

“This marks the second cycle since the government fully transitioned Inua Jamii payments from traditional banking systems to the e-Citizen M-Pesa platform in January 2025, a move designed to enhance efficiency and accessibility,” Social Protection Principal Secretary Joseph Motari said.

Social protection strategy

“Inua Jamii remains a cornerstone of the government’s social protection strategy. It aims to alleviate poverty and promote the well-being of society’s most vulnerable members.”

The last disbursement under the programme was in January 2025, when the mobile-based payment model was first introduced. Since then, the government has actively encouraged beneficiaries to register their mobile phone numbers to ensure seamless access to the funds.

In March, the ministry advised unregistered beneficiaries to visit any Safaricom or M-Pesa agent nationwide to complete their registration process.

“It has been two months since we moved the cash transfer payments to M-Pesa. Senior citizens should not panic; their money is secure. They just need to register, and they will receive all their funds,” Motari said.

He further clarified that funds for those yet to transition would remain safe for at least three months, providing a grace period for late registrants.

The government has expressed its commitment to expanding the reach of the Inua Jamii Programme to at least 2.5 million beneficiaries by the year 2027, as part of its long-term social protection and poverty reduction agenda.
