Pest control authority issues stern warning to Lamu farmers over pesticide misuse

The Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) has issued a warning to farmers in Lamu County against the misuse of pesticides, highlighting the region as a high-risk area for non-compliance.

During a visit to farms in Mpeketoni, PCPB Managing Director Fredrick Muchiri expressed concerns over reports that farmers in the area have been using banned chemicals to enhance crop production.

"We have received numerous complaints from residents that some farmers are using hazardous chemicals. Our board has taken this step after conducting thorough investigations and laboratory tests to confirm the presence of these substances."

The PCPB's Laboratory Manager, Grace Mushami, added that the board is currently investigating the use of chemicals to artificially dry maize in the area.

"We are following up on several cases where harmful pesticides are being used to expedite the drying process, which poses a significant health risk," Mushami explained.

Lamu County's Agriculture Executive, James Gichu, noted that the county government has been actively educating farmers about the dangers of using such chemicals.

"We have been raising awareness about the potential harm these pesticides can cause to consumers," Gichu said.

"However, some farmers continue to ignore these warnings, which is why we are supporting the board's efforts to crack down on this malpractice," he added.

The PCPB has intensified inspections across Lamu, with officers actively conducting raids on various farms to identify and prosecute those violating the regulations.

"We are not taking this matter lightly, we will pursue all those who break the law," Muchiri affirmed.

Farmers are urged to adhere to government guidelines on pesticide use to ensure food safety and protect public health.
