"Any person with written submissions concerning the intended change by the political party shall within seven (7) days from the date of this publication, make their written submissions to the Registrar of Political Parties," reads the notice..
The notice, issued in accordance with Section 20 (1) (c) of the Political Parties Act, confirmed that Gachagua would be removed from his position as deputy leader of UDA.
This shift in UDA's leadership structure follows recent events, including the formal merger between UDA and the Amani National Congress (ANC), which resulted in the incorporation of ANC leaders into UDA's ranks.
The party's national chairperson, Cecily Mbarire, and Secretary-General, Hassan Omar, signed the notice, which was published in The Star newspaper on Thursday.
Months in the making
The move to replace Gachagua has been months in the making.
In a resolution passed by the UDA NEC on November 11, 2023, it was agreed that Gachagua, who had previously served as deputy party leader, would be removed from the post.
The decision was influenced by the fact that Gachagua had been appointed deputy president of Kenya and thus no longer fit the role of deputy party leader, as outlined in the UDA constitution.
Gachagua's removal as UDA deputy leader came after his impeachment by the National Assembly on October 17, 2023.
His impeachment, based on charges of insubordination to party leader and President William Ruto, was upheld by the Senate.
As a result, President Ruto appointed Kindiki as deputy president, formally cementing the leadership transition.
