MP Salasya charged with hate speech, claims victimisation amid 2027 presidential push

Through his lawyers, led by Ken Echesa, Salasya applied to have his firearm and mobile phones returned to him after they were confiscated following his dramatic arrest.

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has been charged in court with hate speech.

The prosecution alleges that Salasya published insulting comments on Facebook about members of a certain community.

He allegedly committed the offence on May 2, 2025.

He pleaded not guilty before Milimani Magistrate Paul Mutai, who released him on a Sh200,000 cash bail with an alternative of a Sh500,000 bond.

Through his lawyers, led by Ken Echesa, Salasya applied to have his firearm and mobile phones returned to him after they were confiscated following his dramatic arrest.

According to the lawyer, they raised concerns on how the accused was arrested, his car was shot at before he was taken to an undisclosed place, and later taken to Nairobi’s Central Police Station

The court will, however, rule on the reinstatement of his bodyguard, firearm and his mobile phones on June 4. The investigating officer has been summoned to shed light on the same.

The MP was arrested on the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway on Friday.

According to his lawyer, the DCI said they are investigating him for publishing false information bordering on ethnic vilification and incitement, but they did not share details.

"This being a politically charged enterprise, we are prepared for any charge that the state will prefer against him", he said.

The MP has been going around the country in what he has described as a campaign to popularise his bid for the country's top seat in 2027.
