The MP called for peace and respect as the country prepares to lay the iconic leader to rest, saying the burial should serve as a unifying moment rather than one marred by tension or political divisions.
He appealed to security agencies to remain vigilant and ensure that the funeral proceeds peacefully, noting that any form of violence would dishonour the memory of the late Odinga, whom he described as a symbol of democracy and unity.
Odinga, who died on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India, was accorded a state funeral service as directed by President William Ruto in recognition of his immense contribution to Kenya’s democracy.
His body was flown from India and received by government officials before being taken to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, for public viewing.
On Friday, the former Prime Minister was honoured with a state funeral service at Nyayo Stadium, an event attended by top government officials, dignitaries and international guests. After the ceremony, the body remained at the stadium for public viewing throughout the day to allow Kenyans to pay their last respects.
According to the funeral schedule, the body will later be taken to his Karen home before being flown to Kisumu.
There will be another public viewing session at Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, Kisumu City, on Saturday. The event was initially planned for Moi Stadium, Kisumu, but was later shifted to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium as part of last-minute changes.
Preparations for Odinga’s final resting place are already complete, with his grave at his Bondo home in Siaya County having been dug on Thursday evening, October 16, shortly after the public viewing at Kasarani.
Photos of the gravesite, located near the mausoleum of his father and Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, have circulated widely online.
Siaya Senator and Odinga’s elder brother, Oburu Oginga, confirmed that the late leader will be laid to rest next to his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, during a private family ceremony at their Bondo home on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
“We will give Raila a dignified send-off, which he deserves, as a dignified son of this land. The programme will end with a burial ceremony at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, and then later on, Raila will be buried next to our mum and dad… in a private burial ceremony which will be attended only by a few people,” Oburu said on Thursday.
President Ruto has officially opened a condolence book at State House, Nairobi, to allow mourners from across the country to pay tribute to the former Prime Minister and reflect on his lifelong service to the nation.
