IEBC says poll preparations on track as police move to contain violence in Kasipul, Mbeere North
Preparations, including the recruitment and training of polling officials and the deployment of logistical support teams, have been completed or are ongoing, while the dispatch of election materials is expected to be finalised in time for polling day.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says preparations for the November 27, 2025, by-elections are on track across 22 constituencies, even as violence continues to escalate in Kasipul Constituency, prompting a joint response with the National Police Service (NPS) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
The Commission provided an update on the state of readiness for the polls and the measures being taken to ensure peace, security, and integrity throughout the electoral process.

Preparations, including the recruitment and training of polling officials and the deployment of logistical support teams, have been completed or are ongoing, while the dispatch of election materials is expected to be finalised in time for polling day.
"While campaigns in most areas have been largely peaceful, the three institutions note with concern isolated incidents of violence, intimidation, and inflammatory utterances, particularly in Kasipul and Mbeere North constituencies," said IEBC chairman, Erastus Ethekon.
"The IEBC, NPS, and NCIC unequivocally condemn these acts, which violate the principle of Article 81 of the Constitution, the Electoral Code of Conduct under the Elections Act, 2011 and undermine peace, tolerance, and national unity."
The Commission reminded political parties, candidates, and agents of their legal obligations under the Electoral Code of Conduct, warning that any breach could attract sanctions, including prohibition from campaigning. The Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee will review complaints and take action in accordance with the law.
"Paragraph 7(a)(iv) of the Electoral Code of Conduct empowers the Commission to prohibit a political party or candidate from campaigning during the campaign period in cases where violations or threats to peace and order are evident," the commission stated.
"Any breach shall attract sanctions as prescribed in the available legislative framework."
As part of a joint call to action, the IEBC, NPS, and NCIC urged political leaders to uphold peace, exercise restraint, and guide their supporters responsibly. Security agencies are tasked with maintaining law and order professionally and impartially, while voters are encouraged to participate freely and peacefully.
