On Friday, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta joined members of the African Union (AU) for the Joint Committee Meeting of the Monitoring, Verification, and Compliance Mechanism (MVCM) held in Nairobi. The virtual gathering updated participants on the status of the Ethiopia-Tigray peace agreement, commonly known as the Pretoria Agreement or the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (CoHA). This agreement was inked between the Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) in November 2022.

During the meeting, Uhuru, also an AU High-Level Panel Member, extended congratulations to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) and the TPLF for the progress achieved thus far. He expressed gratitude for their commitment to fulfilling the terms of the agreement, emphasizing its positive impact on restoring lasting peace in the Tigray region. Uhuru highlighted the discernible reduction in conflict, attributing it to the silencing of guns and the gradual return to normalcy within the area.

However, the retired president acknowledged that there was still significant work ahead for the full implementation of the Disarmament, Demobilisation, and Reintegration (DDR) process. In emphasizing the need for continued efforts, he underscored the importance of addressing the remaining challenges to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable peace in the Tigray region.

The meeting saw the presence of notable figures, including the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa and former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and former Deputy President of South Africa and Member of the AU Panel of the Wise, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Other attendees included Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs and Security at the AU Commission, Alhaji Sarjoh Bah, Director of Conflict Management, Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and Chief Administrator of the Interim Regional Administration of Tigray, Getachew Reda, among others.
