Ruto revokes Mary Wambui's appointment as CA board chair, names Karondo as replacement

Karondo has been appointed as the non-executive Chairperson of the Communications Authority Board of Directors for a three-year term, effective August 8, 2025.

President William Ruto has revoked the appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai as chairperson of the Communications Authority (CA) board and appointed Charles Kamau Karondo as her replacement, according to a Gazette notice dated August 8, 2025.

The changes come nearly three years after Mary Wambui was appointed to the CA board chair role.

Karondo has been appointed as the non-executive Chairperson of the Communications Authority Board of Directors for a three-year term, effective August 8, 2025.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint— Karondo to be the non-executive Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Communications Authority, for three (3) years. The appointment of Mary Wambui Mungai is revoked,” reads the notice.

Mary Wambui was first appointed as the CA board chairperson on December 2, 2022, replacing Gilbert Kibe, who resigned from the position. Her tenure at CA lasted just under three years before the recent changes.

Separately, Mary Wambui has been appointed as the non-executive Chairperson of the Athi Water Works Development Agency Board, effective August 8, 2025. This appointment was made by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eric Murithi Mugaa, through Gazette Notice No. 10948 under the Water Act (Cap. 372).

Mary Wambui’s new role is set for a three-year term, succeeding Charles Kamau Karondo, whose appointment to the Athi Water Works Development Agency was revoked.
