Protests turns ugly as goons attack protesters

Before police dispersed crowds of protesters who were marching in the streets of the city, especially University Way, a group of youths arrived to fight off protesters, robbing them of their phones.

An ugly confrontation between police, protesters, and a seemingly hired group of youths riding motorcycles ensued in Nairobi on Tuesday in the protests against the brutal killing of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang.

Before police dispersed crowds of protesters who were marching in the streets of the city, especially University Way, a group of youths arrived to fight off protesters, robbing them of their phones.

Some youths continued with their protests as police watched from a distance, with the goons carrying whips, terrorising other protesters and bystanders alike.

In some instances, police lobbed tear gas at both groups to disperse them, but they still regrouped.

The activists, led by Hanifa Adan and Julius Kamau, blamed the State for hiring the goons to interrupt their peaceful protests.

"This is unacceptable. It is very wrong for the government to hire youths to attack peaceful protesters," protested Hanifa.

Activist Julius Kamau vowed to proceed with his picketing despite the youths who were disrupting them.

"We will not be intimidated by the State whatsoever. Hiring goons to attack us is a clear indication that they are not interested in getting justice for Albert Ojwang," said Kamau.

Police, on the other hand, heightened security around the city, patrolling the streets using police vans and lorries.

Along Kimathi Street, police lobbed several teargas canisters to disperse protesters.
