Kenyan contingent gears up for Rabat Diamond League showdown

Kenya’s top athletes are set to light up the track at the Rabat Diamond League on May 25, with sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala, middle-distance ace Emmanuel Wanyonyi, and double Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet leading a strong contingent in Morocco.
Kenya’s finest track athletes will take centre stage at the Meeting International Mohammed VI, the fourth stop of the 2025 Diamond League, on Sunday, May 25 in Rabat, Morocco. The Kenyan team features world-class talents including Ferdinand Omanyala, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, Beatrice Chebet and Abraham Kibiwot, all keen to keep the country’s flag flying high ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.
Ferdinand Omanyala, Africa’s fastest man and the face of Kenya’s sprinting resurgence, returns to the Diamond League in the 100m. He’ll face stiff competition from Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo, American star Fred Kerley, and South Africa’s Akani Simbine at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Fresh from a record-setting 150m run and a reflective return to his roots in Kitale, Omanyala is aiming to carry that momentum into victory as he continues his quest to become the world’s fastest man.
In the men’s 800m, Emmanuel Wanyonyi opens his 2025 Diamond League campaign. The reigning World Athletics finalist will line up against Botswana’s Bayapo Ndori in what promises to be a hotly contested two-lap race. He will be joined by compatriots Wycliffe Kinyamal and Aaron Kemei Cheminingwa, strengthening Kenya’s presence in one of its traditional strongholds.
Kenya also boasts a deep field in the 1500m, with Reynold Cheruiyot, Vincent Keter, Boaz Kiprugut, Brian Komen and Festus Lagat all in contention. Their presence signals Kenya’s continued dominance in middle-distance running.
Two-time Olympic champion Beatrice Chebet continues her steady build-up to the World Championships with a run in the women’s 3000m. Chebet, who made history with double Olympic gold in Paris last year, will be closely watched as she fine-tunes her form in pursuit of a world title.
In the men’s 3000m steeplechase, a race long synonymous with Kenyan excellence, Abraham Kibiwot, Chemist Kones and Edmund Serem will take on a strong field led by local favourite Soufiane El Bakkali. The Moroccan will enjoy home support, but the Kenyan trio will be aiming to spoil the party and reclaim dominance in an event that has defined the nation's distance running legacy.
Kenya’s Janeth Chepngetich will also feature in the women’s 3000m, adding depth to the field and highlighting the country’s emerging female talent eager to follow in Chebet’s golden footsteps.
