Kenya pledges Sh132 million for Sudan conflict

The amount is part of the Sh263 billion ($2 billion) mobilised by donors at the end of the international humanitarian conference held in Paris on Monday.
Kenya on Tuesday pledged Sh132 million ($1 million) to support humanitarian efforts in Sudan where a civil war has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions of people.
"The pledges, including one million dollars from President William Ruto on behalf of the Republic of Kenya, were made during the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and the neighbouring countries," a statement from the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary read.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who represented Kenya during the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan, pledged Kenya's support for the mission.
"Kenya insists on immediate ceasefire as well as the opening of all borders and cross lines to enable rapid delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to the Sudanese people," Mudavadi said in a statement.
According to Mudavadi, the international community expressed their grave concern about the worsening conflict and violation of human rights and the impact of the crisis.
The parties reiterated the call to the warring parties to cease hostilities and abide by the commitment from the Jeddah talks, co-facilitated by the African Union and IGAD, in May 2023.
"Kenya's position is one united coordinated initiative building on the Jeddah platform as the best way forward," the Prime CS stated on behalf of Kenya.
"Kenya remains committed to supporting the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people," he added.
French, Germany, and the European Union organised the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries on the first anniversary of the forgotten conflict.
The EU pledged 350 million euros, while France and Germany committed 110 million euros and 244 million euros, respectively.
"This support will allow us to respond to the most urgent needs in the sectors of food and nutritional security, water, sanitation, education, and protection of the most vulnerable population," said French President Emmanuel Macron.
