13 suspects arraigned over mugging in Eastleigh's Maries Stopes area

Thirteen men rounded up in Eastleigh after they were allegedly found robbing members of the public while armed with swords have been charged with preparation to commit felonies.

They are accused of having been in possession of the swords and daggers contrary to section 308 (1) of the Penal Code.

The suspects are Fuad Hussein Abdulahi, Mohammud Yusuf Adan, Abdinasir Abdi, Abdifatah Hassan, Hassnali Hassan and Abdikadir Mohamud, among others.

The prosecution says the suspects were found armed with the offensive weapons in circumstances that indicated they prepared to commit robbery with violence on June 26 at around 10:00 pm near the Maries Stopes area.

They were arrested by seven police officers tipped off by members of the public while on routine foot patrol that the 13 were robbing pedestrians and motorists.

None of the members of the public robbed before police intervened made a report at the nearby Eastleigh North police station; therefore, the suspects could not be charged with the offence of robbery with violence.

The suspects denied the charges before Senior Principal Magistrate Paul Rotich of Makadara Law Courts and sought lenient bail and bond terms through lawyer Gloria Amondi.

The lawyer told Rotich that all the suspects are residents of Eastleigh, which is within the jurisdiction of the court and had parents ready to stand surety for them.

They were released on a cash bail of Sh30,000 and an alternative surety bond of Sh50,000.

Rotich ordered that all the suspects must provide their national identity cards while paying the cash bail and before being released.

The matter will be mentioned on July 14 for a pretrial and setting of hearing dates.
