A police officer was shot dead, and eight remandees escaped after suspected Turkana bandits ambushed a police convoy escorting prisoners in Samburu County on Monday.
The attack occurred at Charda along the Maralal-Baragoi-South Horr road as officers transported detainees from Maralal GK Prison to Baragoi for a mobile court session.
Marti Police Station commander Robert Amuke confirmed the attack.

"On Monday at around 1900 hours, I received information that officers from Baragoi Police Station, who were escorting remandees, had been attacked by suspected Turkana bandits," he said.
Upon arrival at the scene, security reinforcements found the convoy's driver, Police Constable Humphrey Oroba, dead with multiple gunshot wounds.
Oroba's AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, was missing.
Two escort officers, Nicholas Yegon and Kitasho Oloimaatha, were unaccounted for, along with the eight prisoners.
According to the police report, a joint team of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), the General Service Unit (GSU), and regular police officers launched a search operation.
After combing through the dense thickets, they found the two missing officers alive and unharmed, with their firearms and ammunition intact.

Among them, is Lokwawi Adoro, accused of murder and robbery with violence, and Namulem Losam, facing firearm possession charges.
In addition, the body of the slain officer has been moved to Baragoi Sub-County Hospital Morgue for an autopsy.
Authorities have intensified efforts to rearrest the escaped prisoners and track down the attackers.
