He emphasised the need to bolster coordination and improve information sharing to combat the proliferation of small arms and light weapons effectively.

The government has called for improved border controls, stronger legal frameworks, and responsible transfer of small arms and light weapons to curb their illicit circulation.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stressed this during the opening of the Forum of Small Arms and Light Weapons Experts Meeting held in Nairobi on Wednesday.

He highlighted the importance of comprehensive disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) programmes to address the issue.

“Through collective efforts from stakeholders, substantial progress can be made in reducing the accessibility of illicit arms and curbing their devastating impact on societies. However, we must remain steadfast, as this threat continues to evolve. We must continue to enhance border controls, strengthen our legal frameworks, and promote responsible arms transfers,” Omollo said.

As Chair of the Technical Advisory Committee, the PS reaffirmed Kenya’s dedication to working closely with member states and relevant partners.

He emphasised the need to bolster coordination and improve information sharing to combat the proliferation of small arms and light weapons effectively.

Omollo commended the progress made since the establishment of the Regional Centre on Small Arms (RECSA) in 2005, noting that Kenya and other member states have implemented robust measures to curb the illicit arms trade, enhance national frameworks, and promote regional security.

“I implore participants to look at the importance of their role in supporting the RECSA Secretariat and identify ways to enhance the Secretariat's capacity, ensuring it has the framework needed to carry out its vital work,” he added.

The Principal Secretary reiterated Kenya’s unwavering commitment to regional collaboration and urged sustained efforts to build on the progress achieved in addressing this challenge.
