Earth tremor reported in Nairobi and surrounding areas

The magnitude of the earthquake, reported at around 10:30 am, has not yet been confirmed. However, according to Volcano Discovery, the tremors may have originated from Kajiado before spreading to neighbouring areas.

Tremors were felt in parts of Nairobi and its environs on Wednesday, with many Kenyans taking to social media to report the incident.

The magnitude of the earthquake, reported at around 10:30 am, has not yet been confirmed. However, according to Volcano Discovery, the tremors may have originated from Kajiado before spreading to neighbouring areas.

“We are receiving unverified early reports of ground shaking possibly caused by seismic activity in or near Nairobi County, Kenya, on May 7, 2025, at approximately 07:36 GMT. There are no details yet on the magnitude or depth of the possible quake,” reads a statement on the Volcano Discovery website.

“The location, magnitude and time mentioned are indicative, based on our best-fit seismic model.”

Several residents in Nairobi, Kiambu, Westlands, Parklands, and along Mombasa Road have since confirmed experiencing the tremors, describing brief shaking during the incident.

“Felt it on Mombasa Road,” Kenya Credit posted on X.

“Kiambu Road as well,” added Cynthia Cherutoh.

No injuries or damage to property have been reported so far.

Government agencies, including the Kenya Meteorological Department, have yet to issue an official statement.
