The assailant approached his vehicle and fired at him.
In a desperate attempt to protect himself, Lorot tried to deflect the bullet with his right hand but lost his thumb and suffered two additional gunshot wounds to his arm.
The MCA was rushed to St. Theresa Mission Hospital in Kiirua, Meru County, where he is currently recuperating and in stable condition.
Isiolo Governor Abdi Hassan Guyo condemned the attack, expressing his concern over the safety of political leaders in the county.
“The attack on Hon. Lorot is unacceptable, and I strongly condemn this heinous act. I have directed security agencies to act swiftly in ensuring the perpetrators are brought to book," he said.
The governor urged the authorities to expedite the investigation into the matter and ensure that justice is served.
The Isiolo County Assembly also condemned the shooting and expressed its support for the MCA.
In a statement, the assembly confirmed the incident and condemned the attack, stating that they were working closely with security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The County Assembly of Isiolo vehemently condemns the brazen shooting of Hon. Nicholas Lorot, Member of the County Assembly for Burat Ward. The incident occurred near the Northern Galaxy Hotel in Isiolo Town. He was rushed to a medical facility following the attack,” the statement read.
“As a legislative body, we condemn this cowardly act of violence and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to peace, safety, and justice for all. We are working closely with security agencies and pledge our full support to ensure those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”
Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo also condemned the shooting, raising the alarm over the safety of elected leaders in the county.
Speaking in the Senate on Thursday morning, Senator Dullo expressed her deep concerns about the implications of the attack.
“Nicholas Lorot was shot last evening with four bullets. Fortunately, we ensured that the situation was contained. This issue needs to be looked into because it happened in the middle of Isiolo CBD, in full view of security agencies,” Dullo stated.
Her remarks echoed a growing concern that the shooting occurred in a heavily populated area, with little visible security response at the time.
Governor Guyo reiterated the county’s commitment to maintaining law and order, emphasising that such violent acts would not be tolerated.
“Such acts of violence will not be tolerated,” he said.
The governor urged all residents to work together to promote peace and ensure the safety of all, especially elected leaders, who serve as representatives of the people.
