Apple weighs using Anthropic or OpenAI to power Siri in major AI shift

These models are, however, being evaluated for integration into a new version of Siri, designed to be significantly more intelligent and conversational than the current version.

Apple is reportedly considering a groundbreaking move to integrate third-party artificial intelligence models, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, into its digital assistant, Siri.

This marks a significant shift in strategy as the tech giant seeks to catch up with rivals in the rapidly advancing AI landscape.

According to reports from Bloomberg and The Verge, Apple is currently testing several large language models (LLMs) internally, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Google’s Gemini.

These models are, however, being evaluated for integration into a new version of Siri, designed to be significantly more intelligent and conversational than the current version.

While Apple has long prioritised building its own tightly controlled systems, insiders suggest the company is open to using external AI models to ensure the upgraded Siri meets user expectations.

The tests are reportedly being run on Apple’s secure cloud infrastructure to maintain its signature privacy standards.

Sources also indicate that Anthropic’s Claude has so far outperformed other models in quality tests. However, no final decision has been made.

Apple is also rumoured to be exploring potential acquisitions, including AI startup Perplexity, as it deepens its investment in generative AI.

Although initially aimed for a 2025 release, Apple is now expected to push the official rollout to 2026, citing performance concerns.

The leadership reshuffle earlier this year, with Vision Pro head Mike Rockwell now overseeing AI and Siri development, underscores the company’s urgent focus on revamping its assistant.

The race to integrate smarter AI assistants has intensified across the tech industry.

Samsung has already partnered with Google to power its assistant with Gemini, and Microsoft continues to embed OpenAI’s technology across its platforms.

If Apple moves forward with integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT or a similar third-party model, it would represent one of the most dramatic shifts in the company’s AI strategy to date.

This decision could reshape the role of AI on iPhones and beyond.
