Promising Dutch-born Somali teenager Nuuradiin Mahamuud joins Feyenoord

Nuuradiin Mahamuud Abdi, a 15-year old Dutch-born Somali footballer, has joined Feyenoord from PSV Eindhoven on a three-year contract, one that keeps him at the Rotterdam-based club until his 18^th birthday.

Mahamuud, who was born in the European country on July 1, 2009, plays as a leftback and will feature for Feyenoord’s U17 team in the coming season.

The youngster has also featured for the Ajax Amsterdam academy. His move to PSV cost the reigning Dutch champions 105 000 euros (Slightly over SH 14 Million) but his transfer fee to Feyenoord has not been disclosed.

Before joining the Ajax Amsterdam academy, Mahamuud featured for the youth team of SV Batavia ’90, the club-based in a Dutch municipality known as Lelystad where he started his football career.

Mahamuud joined PSV from the Ajax academy in 2023 and during his one season with the Eindhoven-based club, he made his debut for the Netherlands U15 when he played 80 minutes against Czech U15 in a friendly match which ended in a 3-2 loss for the Dutch youngsters. He made two further appearances for Netherlands U15 in two friendly matches against Germany U15 in May this year.

Being in the books of Ajax, Feyenoord, and PSV before his 18^th birthday shows how he is highly-rated and the possibility that many top clubs are tracking his progress. The three clubs are known in the Netherlands as The Big Three and with 149 domestic trophies and 16 European trophies between them, the dominant trio are the most decorated clubs in the history of Dutch football.

Speaking to Feyenoord media after completing his move, Mahamuud expressed happiness and confidence about continuing his football career with the 16-time Dutch champions.

“I like to win matches and will always give my best. I hope to develop myself further at the club and look to the future with great confidence,” he said.

With Swedish-born Somali footballer Taha Ali turning out for Swedish champions Malmo and Bila Hussein, also a Swedish-born Somali footballer, featuring for Hertha Berlin in 2. Bundesliga in Germany, Mahamuud’s move to Feyenoord shines yet another spotlight on the increasing number of footballers of Somali descent making moves in European football.
