The heavy gunfire was also heard inside hotels frequently visited by government officials.
According to local media, security forces are currently locked in a fierce gun battle with the gunmen and numerous individuals remain trapped inside the hotel.
The attack comes a day after UN agencies and other NGOs based at the Halane Compound, Mogadishu Airport, issued a warning about a potential Al-Shabaab attack using weaponised UAV drones.

This is not the first time the militants have attacked the area. In June last year, Al-Shabaab attacked the Pearl Beach Hotel. Unconfirmed reports indicate militants entered the site following several explosions.
Gunfire was reported in the vicinity, with an unspecified number of casualties.
