The President's arrival in New York on Monday marks the start of a series of important engagements aimed at strengthening Somalia's security architecture and establishing partnerships with key international actors.
For years, Somalia has been embroiled in a conflict involving Al-Shabaab militants. It has depended on the military support of regional troops under the AU-backed and UN-mandated ATMIS. However, due to financial constraints, ATMIS troops from Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti have begun withdrawing from Somalia, with plans to complete their withdrawal by mid-2024.
To address its defence needs, Somalia has been training and developing its national army. However, the prolonged arms embargo has impeded progress. The UN lifted the 31-year embargo last week, presenting Somalia with an opportunity to rebuild and re-equip its national army for better readiness to meet the country's security needs.
