Captain Michael Olunga expressed optimism while emphasising the need for caution, noting that this is their first assignment of the year.
Speaking from the camp, Olunga noted that the mood is lively, and everyone is looking forward to the match.
“The mood in the camp is quite amazing, and everyone is looking forward to the first assignment of the year, which is Gabon and Gambia. We just want to thank the new federation, led by Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed and Vice-President McDonald Mariga, for creating a good and peaceful environment for us to camp and perform,” said Olunga.
Olunga also hailed the new coach, Benni McCarthy, for assembling a strong squad, highlighting that the players are eager for the two fixtures, acknowledging them as tough games.
“I want to thank the new coach for believing in a good number of players whom he called up to the squad. Everybody is looking forward to these two fixtures. We know the group is still open, and tough games lie ahead,” he said.
He acknowledged Gambia as a rising force in African football and stressed the importance of a well-calculated approach to secure a positive result.
“In our first match, we are going to face Gambia away. We know they are an upcoming team in Africa, and they have a good squad, so it is going to be a great encounter to showcase our worth,” he said.
Olunga also recognised the efforts of the government and the sports federation in ensuring Nyayo Stadium is ready, noting the significance of playing at home after four years.
“Once again, let me thank the federation and the government for helping us have Nyayo Stadium ready so we can play our first game at home in four years. It is something to commend. But first things first, we have to go to Ivory Coast and play Gabon, so we have to give our very best,” he said.
