KCB dominate Kenya Prisons to finish fifth at CAVB Championships

KCB secured a fifth-place finish at the 2025 CAVB Women’s Volleyball Club Championships with a straight-sets win over familiar foes Kenya Prisons in Abuja.

KCB finished fifth at the 2025 CAVB Women’s Volleyball Club Championships after dominating local rivals Kenya Prisons 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-19) in Abuja, Nigeria.

KCB and Kenya Prisons had been relegated to the 5th–8th place rankings play-offs after suffering quarterfinal defeats to Zamalek and Al Ahly respectively on Wednesday.

Both clubs recovered from those losses by winning their ranking semifinals on Friday - Kenya Prisons eased past Litto of Cameroon 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-16), while KCB edged APR of Rwanda 3-2 (25-27, 17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-9).

KCB, who are two-time winners of the competition, made a strong start in the first set, racing to an 8-0 lead. Prisons responded with a six-point run to narrow the gap to 8-6.

KCB replied with three unanswered points before Prisons fought back again to trail by just one at 11-10.

However, the Bankers regained control to lead 15-11. Despite Prisons’ continued resistance, KCB maintained a steady lead and closed out the first set 25-21.

Prisons showed more urgency in the second set and, after conceding the first point, rallied to lead 5-2.

Their determination was evident as they clawed back each time KCB took the lead. But after going up 21-19, their momentum dipped, and KCB capitalised with a 6-1 run to take the set 25-22.

The third set followed a similar script - KCB opened up a 4-0 lead, and though Prisons got on the board, KCB’s longer spells of control kept them ahead. They maintained a five-point cushion before sealing the set 25-19 and the match in straight sets.

The result added to KCB’s recent run of victories over Kenya Prisons in this competition, having also won their two previous meetings by the same scoreline.
