DCI make history as Kenya’s volleyball giants reach KVF finals

DCI stunned Kenya Prisons to reach their first-ever KVF women’s final, while GSU, KPA, and Pipeline booked their places in what promises to be a thrilling finale at the Makande Indoor Gymnasium.

Kenya's top volleyball teams confirmed their dominance on Saturday as GSU, KPA, DCI, and Kenya Pipeline stormed into the 2024/25 Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) League finals after an action-packed day at the Makande Indoor Gymnasium in Mombasa.

In the women’s category, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made history by reaching their first-ever KVF League final, edging out multiple champions Kenya Prisons in a dramatic five-set thriller.

DCI took the early initiative, winning the first two sets 25-22 and 25-21, before Prisons clawed their way back with commanding 25-17 and 25-16 victories to force a decider. In a tense fifth set, DCI raced to a 6-1 lead, only for Prisons to mount a fierce comeback and take a 12-10 advantage. But DCI regrouped with composure, closing out the set 15-12 to secure a landmark victory.

Later in the evening, Kenya Pipeline booked their spot in the women’s final after overcoming Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) 3-1. KCB took the opening set 25-21, but Pipeline responded with grit and consistency to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-18, and 25-23. Coach Geoffrey Omondi’s side held firm under pressure, edging out a resilient KCB team guided by Japheth Munala.

DCI will now meet Pipeline in what promises to be a high-stakes women’s final. Prisons and KCB will contest the third-place playoff.

In the men’s division, defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) marched into the final after sweeping Equity Bank 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16), completing a dominant 2-0 series win. GSU controlled the match from start to finish with their trademark consistency and organisation.

Joining them in the final are hosts Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), who overwhelmed Prisons Kenya in straight sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-18), building on their 3-1 win in Friday’s opening leg. Roared on by a lively home crowd, KPA's speed and sharp execution proved too much for the prison side, who struggled to keep pace.

With the semifinals concluded, all eyes now turn to Sunday’s title clashes as DCI take on Pipeline for the women’s crown, while GSU and KPA go head-to-head in a much-anticipated men’s showdown.
