Liverpool forward Diogo Jota dies in car crash in Spain

Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota has died in a tragic car accident in Spain, just two weeks after getting married, Portuguese media have reported.

The 28-year-old was reportedly travelling with his brother, Andre, who is also a footballer, when the crash happened along the A-52 highway in Zamora province.

The Eastleigh Voice has seen the confirmation of Jota's death from the Civil Guard in Zamora where the accident took place.

A statement from Zamora Provincial Council read: "Two young people died in an accident on the A-52 (Palacios de Sanabria). The Rionegro del Puente Fire Station (Northern Zone of the Consortium) responded.

The 28-year-old Jota, who won the Premier League title with Liverpool last season and played for Portugal's national team, got married to Rute Cardoso two weeks ago. The couple have three children together.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and all the Portuguese football are completely devastated by the death of Diogo Jota and his brother Andres Silva this morning in Spain,” the federation said in a statement. Details about the condition of his brother Andre and the cause of the accident remain unclear as investigations continue.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2020. Since then, he has made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists, playing a key role in the club's achievements, including two Premier League titles.

Born and raised in Porto, Jota began his football journey at Gondomar before catching the attention of Atletico Madrid in 2016. He was loaned to Porto and then moved to Wolves in 2017, where he made a name for himself. His performances earned him a move to Liverpool, where he became an important figure under Jurgen Klopp and now under Arne Slot.
