Fauzia Kaunjeri: From Kinyago Slums to Mathare United's star

Fauzia Kaunjeri, also known as Kau, holds the impressive title of being the most experienced football player on the Mathare United Women Team.

Growing up in the Kinyago slums, the mother of two never had the chance to play football like her male peers. The absence of a girls team posed an additional challenge, as boys were hesitant to play football with girls due to the perception that it was a boys' game.

Her football career began at the young age of eight. It all started when she stumbled upon a group of older girls playing the sport on her way home from school at Air Force grounds in Eastleigh. Intrigued and inspired, she couldn't help but stop and watch the game, even though a stranger eventually chased her away to change her school uniform.

After watching older girls play football, my curiosity compelled me to give it a try. Fauzia told Eastleigh Voice, "Since I began playing, the sport has captivated me."

She started her football career at St. John's non-formal school in Majengo. When she was just 14 years old, she became a part of the Pumwani Girls team. She played with them for two years before moving on to the Black Cat football team. Unfortunately, the team disbanded shortly after she joined, so she found a new home with the Golden Angles. Eventually, she made her way to the oldest women's football club in Kenya, the Mathare United Women team, in 2018.

"Football has played a crucial role in helping me steer clear of negative influences and social vices. I am grateful for the unwavering support of my parents, who encouraged me to pursue my passion for the game I hold dear," she says.

Mathare United Women's FC coach appreciates Kaunjeri's contribution to the team.

"She holds the record for being the most tenured player on our team. She excels as a team leader and possesses a remarkable knack for handling various situations, both on and off the pitch. Ever since she joined Mathare in 2018, she has remained dedicated to the team, never playing for any other club. We greatly value her loyalty and are thrilled to have her as a part of our team. Ann Aluoch, who also coaches the Junior Starlets, Kenya's women U17 team, shared her thoughts with Eastleigh Voice.

Fauzia Kaunjeri effortlessly balances the demands of motherhood, her passion for football, and her successful career as a businesswoman. Every day, after her training sessions, she dedicates herself to running a small shop where she sells a delicious array of treats, including cookies, ice pops, mabuyu, kashata, and slides. Her dedication and entrepreneurial spirit have allowed her to support her young family.

One of the most challenging moments in her career came when she suffered a significant head injury, rendering her unable to participate in the game for an extended period of time. As a defender, she faced a psychological setback that impacted her game. After the incident, she developed a fear of challenging opponents for aerial balls. However, with time, she gradually overcame this fear and regained her confidence on the pitch.

Fauzia Kaunjeri enjoys mentoring young players on and off the pitch, providing them with valuable advice. Additionally, she dedicates her time to visiting girls' teams in her community, where she offers voluntary coaching sessions and health talks.

"Never give up on your dreams; that's the advice I have for young players. The possibilities are endless." She concludes.
