Chebet wins 5000m gold as Faith Kipyegon is disqualified despite finishing second

Kenya has finally registered on the medal table tally at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after Beatrice Chebet outsprinted compatriot Faith Kipyegon to win the gold medal in the women's 5000 metres in splendid fashion at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Monday night.
After the Kenya trio of Chebet, Kipyegon, and Margaret Chelimo broke away from the leading pack immediately after the bell with Kipyegon leading the charge to the finish line, Chebet got the better of the double Olympic 1500 metres champion in the final 60 metres, overtaking the 30-year old on the way to winning the gold medal with a time of 14:28.56.
Kipyegon crossed the finish line in second place only to be disqualified after having tussled with the Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay in the final 800 metres of the race.

As a result, Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands was upgraded to the silver medal after having finished third with a time of 14:30.61, a season best for the athlete who will also be competing in the 10000 metres and the marathon.
Nadia Battocletti of Italy scooped the bronze medal after finishing fourth with a time of 14:31.64, a national record.
Kenya's Margaret Chelimo was fourth with a season best time of 14:32.23.
